Economics of Soil Health

The Oklahoma Conservation Commission is working with American Farmland Trust and OSU economists to determine the cost and financial return on implementing soil health practices.

The practices revolve around the 5 principles of soil health.

  1. Limit soil disturbance  No-tillage
  2. Keep the soil covered.   Residue from the previous crop sequesters carbon, reduces evaporation, cools the soil and promotes microorganism life in the soil
  3. Keep a living root in the soil year-round  Use diverse cover crops in the off-season rather than leaving land fallow
  4. Introduce livestock grazing on cropland.  The natural system has always included livestock recycling nutrients and hoof action to encourage plant growth
  5. Plant diversity through crop rotation and/or cover crop mixes
